Uh-oh, the trendy enbys are at it again.

Delightfool is an established show from the hare-brained minds of Booth the Clown and Jak Darling. Set in the wake of an impending storm, the two navigate through trials of loneliness, absurdity, and sketches that are as wholesome as they are hilarious.

The crowd is abuzz from the moment the duo runs onto the stage. An opening number sets the silly tone and the audience is locked in. The music is lively, the dancing energetic, and the vibes immaculate. The show then splinters into a series of clownish bits, each one framed by reminders of a storm that’s headed right for us.

It’s all designed to play to both of the performers’ key strengths. Booth is incredibly lithe and goofy with their joyous facial expressions and iconic laugh. When they move, their joints defy the laws of anatomy. They combine physicality and comedy flawlessly.

Jak, on the other hand, brings glam and class to the proceedings, constantly switching into more and more striking dresses that stun the audience repeatedly. Their cheekiness is on full display with each of their sketches, and they never shy away from pushing the boundaries a little.

For the most part, they grace the stage together. Their chemistry is electric and never falters for a second. Sometimes, one of the duo will leave the other to do a solo bit while they switch costumes, which allows each of them to shine in their own right before re-combining into the partnership we all know and love. It’s genuinely such a tease sometimes. Neither of them can leave the stage without getting the audience giddy for the next bit they’re cooking up backstage. It’s banger after banger to the point where you feel like you’re on a comedic rollercoaster that had its brakes cut long ago.

And then, for a brief moment, the show slows down.

Everything calms itself within the eye of the storm, and we see these performers for who they truly are: besties. It really drives home what makes this show so successful. Jak and Booth are the perfect pairing for a show like this. They have such a strong connection with each other, and you can see those sparks flying every time they look into each other’s eyes. They play with each other, laugh with each other, and get cheeky (literally sometimes) with each other in a way that you can’t help but fall in love with. It’s proof of how genuine and warm their relationship is. They’re inseparable.

There are so few duos like Delightfool. The kind that epitomises the phrase ‘ride or die’. Performers who are so generous with each other and work to fill each other’s creative cups. It doesn’t hurt that they’re hilarious too. Every sketch is carefully planned out, and perfectly executed, even when the odd stool finds its way to the audience’s feet. Jak and Booth remind us that looking out for other is the foundation of a strong friendship.

So come and take shelter from the storm with them.

Disclosure: As a somewhat active member of the Wellington performing arts community, I may be quite familiar with a number of the performers in this show. Having said that, I am not a liar, and there is zero bias in my reviews, shut up.

Also, tickets were provided to me for free by the production. Literally changes nothing, though.
