There’s a secret in fried chicken circles that’s pretty well kept. It’s that Taiwanese fried chicken is the best fried chicken. This is inarguable. Do not try. You will lose.

The Ayam! In Wellington by Frankie’s Bar + Eatery is probably the only time I’ve seen Taiwanese fried chicken in Wellington. It’s got all the hallmarks of great TFC; sweet spices, a little chilli and super crunchy. It’s paired with a nice creamed spinach which acts as a cheese substitute. It’s fatty and delicious. The black doris plum and bourbon sauce is a fun addition. It adds a tart sweetness that gives a sort of Christmas dinner vibe. The fried bun is soft without being overly-oily, and the honey chips are fun and sticky.

I’m just glad Taiwanese chicken is in town.
