It’s often not that your food fights back. And fair enough. You paid good money, and you’re putting a lot of pressure on it to be good. In a festival of burgers, it’s hard to be a standout amongst all the fancy places with more resources than yourself, and it can all just get to you as a fledgling burger in a tough job market.
Then you explode.
The Juicy Loosie by Loosies Superette is a fantastic explosion, both of flavour and of cheese. The main draw is that this is a take on the classic Juicy Lucy, where the cheese is stuffed into the patty and grilled flat, waiting to be released. One bite in, and there was an audible pop as the cheese came pouring out over the meat, like a fondue fountain localised entirely within my hands. No fear, though, the crispy onions were there to filter that cheese back into the burger, resulting in a smoky, cheesy, meaty flavour profile that just screamed classic.
Topping it off was Baxter’s Dragon Breath BBQ Sauce, a Welly on a Plate classic which combined its powers with the jalapeño to give the burger a nice kick of heat. The bun was soft and held its form, despite the cheese explosion and sauces making their best efforts to make it soggy.
It’s a traditional, well-executed burger that does all the classics right.
